THE SYLLABUS FOR UKRAINIAN DANCE is a training program for dancers commencing approximately 6 years of age, combining Ukrainian character and ballet. Although dancers may study any of the grades at any given pace, the complete syllabus is designed for implementation over a minimum of 9 years, suggesting earliest completion by 15-16 years of age.

This carefully researched program identifies correct placement and technique for the academic performance of Ukrainian dance. Particular attention is paid to progression, by establishing then building on principles from one level of learning to the next. In this manner the student can proceed effectively through increasing levels of complexity. The layered learning is fundamental to the syllabus design, and promotes successful advancement from one level to the next.

For the instructor, the syllabus serves as a ready-made lesson plan. Set exercises are suggested, a comprehensive vocabulary is provided, and musical resources accompany the set work.   • The Syllabus for Ukrainian Dance is the first-of-its kind.
  • Research toward the syllabus began in 1993 and the first edition was released in 2001.
  • The syllabus includes a procedures component, which guides:
    • Membership
    • Examination
    • Instructor and dancer certification
    • Education/workshops, and
    • Authorized use
  • The Ukrainian dance glossary includes 274 steps and the set work includes 159 exercises – all professionally filmed, titled and pronounced.
  • The Ukrainian dance glossary uses Ukrainian terminology arrived through research and consultation with both Ukrainian and Canadian instructors.
  • A master glossary provides a program-wide index of all steps, for convenient location, reference and comparison.
  • Notations are provided for each of the set exercises.
  • More than 130 instructors have participated in the syllabus workshop to date, and more than 2,000 student examinations have been delivered!
  • The classical ballet component of the syllabus workshop is delivered by certified instructors of the Royal Academy of Dance.
  • Membership is open to instructors 16 years of age and over.
