Watercolor - Hopak!
Born in Edmonton Alberta, Leda Prytuluk has always taken great pleasure in
expressing the beauty of the Ukrainian culture through painting, music and dance.
In 1986 she began a nine year active membership with the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers.
Her participation in two Canadian Tours, as well as the 1990 Ukraine performances,
inspired her to begin sharing the joy of her dance experiences on stage through
painting. Her first watercolor for the Shumka Dancers, titled The Four Seasons,
is a composition based on the theme of the 1995 Canadian Tour opening half.
Four years later, her interest in character roles inspired the creation and
presentation of over forty watercolors featuring the myth of Rusalka.
In the autumn of 1995, Leda moved to Quebec City to pursue her studies in art
and French, completing a bachelor's degree in Visual Art as well as an Art History
Certificate. She enjoys traveling and spent some time in Florence, Italy studying
realism and oil painting techniques. Leda presently teaches art and English
in Quebec City and looks forward to learning and expressing more about her history,
culture and tradition rooted deeply in the Ukrainian Community of Canada.
Commissioned by the Shumka School of Dance, Hopak! is a display of color, grace,
music and movement expressed through Ukrainian dance. It is a celebration of
spirit, inspiring a harmonious blend of creativity and tradition. We shall all
dance together in our greatest dreams, performing Hopak with pleasure and pride.
