John Pichlyk, Resident Choreographer
A strong believer in the universality of the human spirit, John Pichlyk has
endeavoured in his work to create dance that transcends all boundaries and ultimately
touches the soul. Respectful of the time-honoured traditions of Ukrainian folklore
and customs, he believes that Ukrainian dance must also evolve, reflecting the
sensitivities of the performers and their audience. To this end, Mr. Pichlyk
has collaborated with Victor Lytvynov in an effort to communicate the beauty
and diversity of Ukrainian culture in a new and exciting way and in the process
has taken Ukrainian dance in a new direction.
As the Artistic Director of Shumka from 1982 - 1996, John Pichlyk created,
developed, choreographed and collaborated with costume and set designers, composers,
choreographers, producers and dancers to bring Shumka to life. A man with a
vision and an intrinsic understanding of dance, Mr. Pichlyk has pushed the boundaries
of Ukrainian dance by creating a unique hybrid of folk dance, ballet, character
and modern dance.
Victor Lytvynov, Guest Choreographer
In 1995, Victor Lytvynov first worked with the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers and
their touring production of Absolutely Shumka. His influence was hailed by audiences
and critics for its unique style, in which music inspires his dramatic, poignant
and often humorous choreography. Combining Mr. Lytvynov's talent and experience
with Shumka's own magic propelled Ukrainian folk dance to a new performance
level.
Appointed as Artistic Director of the Kyiv Ballet in 1987, Mr. Lytvynov spearheaded
an extensive redevelopment of its repertoire. Under his direction, the company
has sent several of its new productions abroad where they have been met with
critical acclaim.
Mr. Lytvynov has for the past three years been the Artistic Director for North
American tours of THE NUTCRACKER, a ballet fantasy, an artistic collaboration
between the Kyiv Ballet and Shumka. In 1999, he was awarded the Kyivska Pektoral
for Best Choreography for Divchyna I rozbiinyk (Lady and The Hooligan). This
award, given by the Union of Theatrical Activists of Ukraine and the Culture
Administration of the City of Kyiv, recognizes the best new productions of the
theatre season.
