The Ukrainian Shumka Dancers are a proud sponsor in the fight to help end MS. A cause that is very close to the hearts and minds of many members of Shumka's family, the fight against this devastating disease is one that Shumka whole-heartedly supports.
In December 2004, Shumka's producer and Honorary Lifetime Member, Michael Sulyma staged a three-week run of The Nutcracker: A Ballet Fantasy at the Citadel Theatre, featuring the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers and Ukraine's Kyiv Ballet. Beginning with that production, and over the course of several Shumka events and performances to follow, including Shumka at 50: An Anniversary Concert in March 2009, donations collected after performances and funds raised by dancers' participation in the RONA MS Bike Tours have amounted to nearly $70,000, to the end of 2009. Shumka's participation in the 2009 bike tour alone, raised almost $25,000.
Shumka will continue to support fundraising efforts to end MS and looks forward to finding ways for our art to open doors in aid of those whose hearts and souls want to dance, even when their bodies cannot.
