The Shumka Syllabus for Ukrainian Dance is the only one of its kind in the English-speaking world providing a structured, incremental curriculum for learning Ukrainian dance, much like the Royal Academy Syllabus does for ballet.

In Edmonton, Shumka effectively stands for Ukrainian dancing; over the years the terms have become interchangeable if not synonymous. It's simply a testament to how successfully Shumka has not only achieved its original vision but also embraced a mandate of developing the art form in Canada and internationally.

Shumka is committed to the realization of the innovative dreams of our company's artists and those of our creative partnerships with professional artists and producers worldwide. We seek to give our audiences the best of experiences through our work with The Kyiv State Opera and Ballet of Ukraine, Sulyma Productions Inc. (SPI), designers Maria Levitska and Oksana Paruta, composers Yuri Shevchenko, Andriy Shoost, Slavko Halatyn, and Yuri Chernenko, and international choreographer, Viktor Lytvynov.
Our Canadian collaborators and mentors are, and will continue to be, Veronica Tennant (C.C.), Brian Webb, John Pichlyk, Jean Marc Genereux, Alice Major, Francois Chevennement, JoJo Lucila, Leo Sato, Allan Gilliland, Gene Zwozdesky, Vasyl Popadiuk, Brian Cherwick, Junetta Jamerson, Ann Vriend, Alexis Kochan, Kathy Metzker, Aram Manukyan, Robert Shannon, James DeFelice, Tania Alvarado, and Randall Fraser.
Shumka is dedicated to the spirit of creativity in original dance works and original music. Between 2006 and 2010, Shumka's Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, Dave Ganert choreographed more than 20 original dance-works that premiered on major stages in Canada and abroad; more than any other choreographer working in the Ukrainian dance genre in Canada.
