Our Values
Core Beliefs and Values
Not only has the company added immeasurably to the repertoire of both traditional and contemporary Ukrainian dance, music and stagecraft, deftly escaping the ethnic arts ghetto, it has convincingly connected the modern multicultural dots often talked about but rarely achieved.
Editorial, March 2009
- Shumka exists to ensure that artists and citizens, who believe in Canada’s rich Ukrainian heritage of dance and music, have a distinctive voice on the national and international performing arts stage. This Shumka voice expresses itself through respect for Ukrainian tradition and a passion to create original work. It is grounded in the diversity of the creative artists that tell our stories in our distinctive style of Ukrainian dance. It is a Shumka voice that is alive, innovative, and reflective of a changing world.
- Shumka believes our strength comes from our collective and focused efforts to use the arts to help shape the image of who we are as Albertans, and who we are outside of Alberta's borders. Shumka nurtures other arts groups and international artists, and is, in turn, nurtured by the best of their work.
- Shumka values exemplary standards of personal performance and integrity. We are fair and ethical, and respect the knowledge, expertise, experience, and perspectives of all stakeholders who value the 50-year, forward-looking legacy of Shumka whose stewardship has been entrusted to us.
